Saturday, January 26th, the Farragut Astros and the Galactic Narwhals LEGO Robotics teams competed in a qualifying tournament.

During the competition students were judged in several areas:

Robotics – Students are given a specific course with several LEGO related missions to complete. This year’s theme was Into Orbit for the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.

Technical – Students show off their best programs and explain the technical/coding part behind it.

Core Values – Students are given a team-building task when they walk in the room. They are expected to work together as a team to complete the task while using the First LEGO League (FLL)’s set of Core Values. They are judged on how well they work together as a team.
Project – Students had to come up with a project to complete that related to the FLL’s theme, Into Orbit. Students completed research and came up with a solution related to problems astronauts face in space.
The Galactic Narwhals did a great job but, unfortunately, did not qualify for the regional tournament. Thank you to the Galactic Narwhals for a great season.

BlueJacket boys and girls soccer recap for the 2018-19 season

$

0

The Admiral Farragut Academy Boys and Girls Soccer teams had an amazing 2018-2019 season!

The Boys Varsity Soccer team recently completed their most successful season in school history. The boys soccer team competed in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference this year. They went 4-0 in their division to clinch the number one seed in the SSAC tournament. The boys reached the SSAC finals after defeating Legacy Charter School 8-0 in the quarterfinals and Windermere Prep 5-0 in the semifinals. In the SSAC finals, the boys lost a hard-fought game to St. Edwards 2-1. This would be their only loss on the season. The boys final record stands at 14-1, a monumental improvement from last season.

The team was led by senior co-captain goalkeeper Victor Castro, who played extremely well all season. Victor was the difference maker in several games and finished the season with six shutouts. Co-captain Justin Ariza, Jun Lee, Pablo Lescure, Miguel Banuelos and Evan Schlifstein all played outstanding defense throughout the year. The defense gave up only 11 goals all season.

The offense was led by senior forward Lliam Davis and junior midfielder Vander Rocha. The two players combined for 38 goals and 32 assists, leading the way in scoring. Hugo Alnebeck, Joao Pimenta, Alex Oi, Jared Ariza, Vinicius Rocha, and Dylan Miksch also contributed to the high scoring offense, which scored an average of 6 goals per game.

The boys soccer team will be graduating 12 seniors this year. They will be sorely missed, as their contributions have helped transform the soccer program. However, the team will be returning a core group of underclassmen whose experience and leadership should help next year’s squad try to match or better the accomplishments of this past season.

The Girls Varsity Soccer team battled injuries and tough opposition this past season to finish with a 5-6-1 record. The girls soccer team played in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference this season, securing a playoff spot by finishing second in their division. The girls lost a hard fought game in the SSAC quarterfinals to Windermere Prep. The girls completed their season with a 1-0 shutout victory over SSAC rival Bell Creek Academy. The girls team suffered numerous significant injuries this year, which makes their accomplishments that much more remarkable.

The girls were led by senior co-captain forward Sydni Bostik. Sydni scored 28 goals this year to easily lead the team in scoring. Sydni was the MVP for the offense and she is looking forward to continuing her dominant play at the collegiate level next season. Brielle Benefield, Casey Andrion, Melissa Diaz, and Yessica Johnson also contributed to the scoring production.

The defense was led by freshman Serena Vazquez. Serena did a tremendous job securing the middle of the field and making life very difficult for opposing forwards. Lilly Mozombite, Eileen Harreld, and Katerina Fe also played extremely well for the defense this year.

Senior co-captain Valentina Galliano stepped in and played outstanding in goalie for the team this season. Despite never playing goalie before, Valentina played the position exceptionally and always gave the girls a great opportunity to win.

The girls team will graduate five seniors this year. They have so much to be proud of, including having contributed to the girls soccer team’s first winning season last year. The girls will return a core group of underclassmen who will look to continue to improve the program and become better soccer players.

It has been an exciting first half of the 2018-2019 school year for our athletes and for the Admiral’s Athletics Club (AAC)! We wanted to thank all our sponsors, volunteers, teachers and staff supporters who have made it all possible.

A round of applause goes to our teams.  Their list of accomplishments is impressive!

  • Girls Volleyball won Bronze Bracket
  • Girls Swimming ended with a 6-2 record, Boys Swimming ended with a 4-3-1
  • Cross Country won Districts, placed 3rd in Regions, and 5th in the States
  • The Golf team finished very close to making state finals
  • Our Football team had a historic year winning the 2A Region 3 Championship and ending their regular season with an impressive 8-1 record
  • The Boys Soccer team placed Independent State Runner Up and had 13 wins and the Girls Soccer team had 4 wins
  • The Boys Wrestling team had 17 wins and the Girls Wrestling team had 3 wins

Spring sports have all begun practice and we invite everyone to attend as many games as possible, especially their home openers. Lacrosse plays against East Lake HS on 2/21, baseball plays against Dixie Hollins HS on 2/25, and softball plays against Northside Christian on 2/28.

With the support from sponsors and participants in our annual Poker Run, we were able to purchase new wall padding for the gym, a basketball bounce back machine, wrestling team shirts/shorts, help teams with travel costs, lacrosse gear bags, practice shorts and balls, basketball shorts and jerseys for girls and boys, irrigation products for field maintenance, polos for coaches, new supplies for concessions, an air-conditioning system for the field bathroom/concession/armory building, two corn hole games for students, and a softball pitching machine with practice balls. Thank you all again!

Our goal doesn’t stop there. Here’s what we’re working on now:

  • New larger lockers in the Field House (the old lockers will be moved to the gym)
  • New or refurbished golf cart for the athletic department
  • New equipment (wall ball) for the tennis courts
  • Refurbished field space for additional practice areas

Go Blue Jackets!!

7th graders compete in Survival Robot competition

$

Recently, Mrs. LoRusso’s 7th grade STEM class had their competition for their Survival Project Robots. They had high school Principles of Engineering students judge their robots. The winners are Karolina Kutova and Koen Thill.

The backstory for the project was as follows: The year is 2201. The Earth as we know it no longer exists. Civilization has destroyed itself through nuclear wars, pollution, and lack of respect for the environment. The human race has all but ceased to exist. A group of multicultural scientists, doctors, and engineers have survived by living in a biosphere for the last 20 years. As they emerge from their protective sphere, they find the Earth totally destroyed. They need to rebuild the Earth and civilization. They will have to rebuild using only recycled materials that can be scavenged from the countryside while protecting themselves from wild animals.

The project required that one gear make an up and down motion, one gear must be reciprocating, one gear must be rotating, two of the gears may be on hand cranks, only one gear train may be related to defense, one of the gears must move when the wheels move (no hand-crank), and each gear train must have a specific job related to survival that can be clearly explained. For extra credit, the students could have 2 or more gears moving when the wheels move with no hand crank.

Karolina and Koen knew that to win, they’d have to go above and beyond. Their project included a wood chopper, a water generator, crops, a defensive fire designed to scare away predators, and a windmill to power the entire thing.

“Everyone really liked the windmill,” Koen said. “It was our favorite part, and I really think the Upper School kids liked it a lot too.”

“It was really fun. We came up with everything together,” Karolina said.

“Somedays Karolina would do more work and other days I would,” Koen added. “She did all the decorations and writing. She’s really good at art.”

Karolina and Koen decided to go beyond the scope of the project because they both enjoy engineering. “We already have good grades, so we figured we could make it even better,” Koen said.

“I really want to do engineering or robotics in Upper School,” he continued. “Space is the future. I really want to invent something for space travel someday.”

Karolina isn’t sure yet where she wants to go. “Engineering is really fun,” she said, “but I have a lot of other interests too, so I haven’t decided.”

Karolina and Koen will go to lunch with Mrs. LoRusso as a reward for winning the competition.

BlueJacket girls wrestling team competes at state tournament

Cadets Angela LoRusso ’19 and Madison Moore ’21 competed in the 2019 Florida Girls State Wrestling Tournament this weekend. This year’s girl’s state tournament was the toughest competition in its 8-year history with 275 girls from 94 schools competing. Girls wrestling has seen exponential growth in Florida the past few years with an estimated 700 girls registered this season. And girls wrestling continues to be the fastest growing high school sport nationally.

Madison Moore, in only her 2nd year of wrestling, went 2-2 and qualified for the 2nd day of the tournament for the first time. Angela LoRusso posted a 3-2 record in the most competitive weight class of the tournament, 106 lbs. Angela lost in the “blood round” in a close match leaving her one win shy of medaling.

Coach LoRusso also assisted with coaching girls from other Pinellas and Tampa high schools that were unable to have a coach attend or otherwise needed help. It was a great experience for all the girls to learn, improve, and enjoy. They affectionately began calling themselves the Tampa Bay Orphans in hopes of forming a “super team”.

Overall the girls team attended 6 separate girls-only tournaments with both girls medaling individually multiple times. Madison finished with a record of 10-8 and placed 2nd in two tournaments. The first placements of her career. Angela finishes with a girls record of 20-6 with multiple 1st and 2nd place placements. Angela will continue to compete this season at 106 lbs in the upcoming Coed Wrestling District Tournament hosted at Admiral Farragut Academy.

Traditional “Little Army-Navy Basketball Game” Revived

The Founders Cup against New York Military Academy took place this past January in Baltimore. Both teams showed a great display of outstanding sportsmanship and mutual respect for each other. It was a great matchup with a close score the entire game. The Farragut BlueJackets won 67-62. We look forward to continuing the Founders Cup Tournament and supporting this long-standing rivalry for years to come. Here’s to our friends at NYMA! We will see you next year and we hope to hold onto the Founders Cup Trophy.

Naples Alumni Gathering

Raey Webster ‘59 and CAPT Peter Easton ‘49 with his wife Kathy hosted a Farragut alumni gathering on February 7th at their residence at Glenview Place. The weather was a balmy seventy degrees with cool drinks, good food and great conversation. Connecting with Farragut alumni made the evening truly special. An intimate setting with eight attendees including Al Ferrante ‘66, Tom Miller ‘73 who resides in nearby Cape Coral, Michael Gaynor ‘55S and his wife Constance drove from Marco Island and shared that this was the first alumni gathering they have attended. Everyone enjoyed the evening and stories shared around the table of the many Farragut stories and top secret antics of their youth. Everyone had a fun evening and vowed to keep in touch and to attend this year’s Homecoming Oct 17-19.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Sixth and seventh graders at Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Pete may not be old enough to learn how to drive yet, but they are, believe it or not, learning to fly.

It’s all happening thanks to a grant from American Airlines. The school is one of 17 in the U.S. giving grade school students opportunities for hands-on training on how to fly a plane.

lower school aviation admiral farragut academy

“They’re all doing a really great job”, said academy aviation director Robert Ewing, “and if they don’t become pilots, at least they get a chance to do something pretty cool.”

After some training in the classroom on a flight simulator, the first group of grade schoolers was transported to Albert Whitted Airport where, once in the air, Ewing would let each of them take over the controls.

“It was amazing!” said seventh-grader Sophia Raymer. “We could see the whole St. Pete and everything up there,”

Sixth-grader Hazel Alevoc agreed.

“At first I was nervous,” Alevoc said, “and I thought it was going to be like the simulator, but it was actually a lot easier than I thought.”

Admiral Farragut Academy expects to have more than 50 of their youngest students take advantage of the training over the next three weeks.

UPDATE AS OF TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2019

We have more exciting media coverage to announce! Tomorrow News Channel 8 Reporter Lila Gross and her crew will be on campus to film live from the Aviation classroom!  Lila will feature the new flight simulator, interviews with Aviation Director Rob Ewing and Upper and Lower School students.
Here’s the LIVE schedule for air times:
6-7 a.m.: Lila reports from the AFA Aviation Lab LIVE
7-9 a.m.: LIVE coverage shifts to WTTA (channel 6 or 1006 for most)
11 a.m. and 4 p.m.: Lila’s story is scheduled to air on News Channel 8
The link to the story will be posted later Wednesday on the News Channel 8 website. We will share that when we get it!

L-R: Third place winner Elijah Soyke ’19, VFW Post 4256 District Commander Ronald D. Mills, Farragut history teacher Mark Panuthos, and first place winner Madilyn Landry ’19

On Monday, February 18, four Farragut seniors were recognized for their audio essay submissions in the annual VFW “Voices of Democracy” essay contest. The topic this year was “Why My Vote Matters” and the students developed their speeches by talking with family and friends and conducting independent research. Audio essay submissions had to be at least three to five minutes long and were submitted last October.

Farragut students dominated the competition taking two first-place finishes, along with second and third place. Congratulations to Steven Smiley ‘19 and Madilyn Landry ‘19 who both won first place at the district level. Steven argued that voting isn’t merely a right but a responsibility and Madilyn focused on the importance of voting now to preserve future freedoms. The first place winners will have an opportunity to compete with other high schools in Florida at the regional competition in Orlando later this year. Congratulations also to Vanessa Amaya ‘19 who finished second and Elijah Soyke ‘19 who finished third.

The award winners of the evening. Farragut students, third place winner Elijah Soyke ’19, first place winner Madilyn Landry ’19, and second place winner Vanessa Amaya ’19 are to the far left. The other Farragut first place winner, Steven Smiley ’19, won through a different VFW post and is not pictured.

Not only will this be a great way to support our school and students, but this will also be a fantastic evening to spend with other parents, your friends, family, and business associates. Because this event is welcoming the public as well as friends and families of AFA, we have increased our marketing and reach. The following is a short list of some of what you can expect to see in the next 4 weeks:

  • 4 Clear Channel electronic billboards strategically located around Tampa Bay

  • Yard signs (let me know if you would like one for your home or business!)
  • Various Facebook videos and ads
  • Postcard mailing to almost 13,000 households in the Tampa Bay area

With the time of this program coming near, we really need your assistance with the following:

  • Ticket Sales! Please purchase your tickets early and invite your friends, neighbors, business associates to do so as well.  What a wonderful gift this evening would make for someone special! Feel free to purchase a ticket for your favorite teacher as well. The success of this program will depend on ticket sales so please help us spread the word! Please use the following link to use and share: www.farragut.org/RFTS
  • Live Auction items that are unique items or experiences. A few examples of experiences and items that we already have are NASA Tour, DC Tour, Chalet in Arizona, Helicopter tour and dinner, Ms. Pac-Man video console, Fender Stratocaster guitar, specialty bourbon, jewelry, etc.
  • Silent Auction items that you would coordinate with your homeroom parent.

For special assignments, we are looking for volunteer assistance with the following:

      • Live Auction– Preparing Displays before the auction
      • Silent Auction– Finding items to donate and helping to prepare displays of the item before the auction
      • Design and Decorating– Before the event and the day of

You are also invited to join us on Wed, March 20 for our Parents’ Group Meeting with two choices of times: 8:15 a.m. in the Mess Hall or 6:30 p.m. in the West Lounge. Light refreshments provided and raffle prizes too! Please feel free to contact us with any questions or ideas.  Thank you for helping to make this an incredible fundraiser for our school!

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – School now goes way past reading, writing, and arithmetic. Students as young as third grade can now even learn to fly planes while in class.

The young pilots at Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg fly out of Albert Whitted every day and have flight simulators in the classroom to teach students the mechanics of flying.

Kids from all around the world come to the Tampa Bay area to attend the prestigious school.

Notable senior from Moscow, Diana Romanovskaya, also known as R-12 on the flight board because of her long last name, will be attending Embry Riddle in Daytona Beach after graduating from Admiral Farragut Academy.

The private school was established in 1933 as a college prep school serving students in grades Pre-K to 12 with an international boarding program for students in grades 8-12.

Admiral Farragut Academy is one of 17 schools in the country to receive a grant from American Airlines for its aviation department.
