Farragut Day of Giving

$
0
0

The Farragut Day of Giving will officially begin at 12:01 AM (EST), Tuesday, November 12, 2019. This 24-hour event will unite Admiral Farragut Academy alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students, and friends in the common goal of showing their Farragut Pride and raising funds for the Farragut Fund and AFA Foundation.

A new concept this year, the Farragut Day of Giving is similar to single-day events conducted by many independent schools, colleges, and universities across the country. The Farragut Day of Giving is designed to replace multiple requests for funds throughout the year and unite on one day with one mission to support our school.

Funds raised provide the base of support for enriched academic, art, and athletic programs, financial assistance, teacher professional development, classroom needs, technology upgrades, facilities, and many more opportunities that make up the Farragut experience.

Staff and student volunteers will make and receive calls during the Farragut Day of Giving. They will also be personalizing and signing thank you cards for donors, recording messages of thanks, and sharing testimonial videos on social media. We invite you to join the conversation and share your Farragut story and pride. (Add social media links)

Our goal is to focus on the number of donations received rather than the total amount raised. Donations can be made online at farragut.org/giving or by phone at 727-343-3678. People may contribute online early at farragut.org/giving and put the code “DOG” written in the memo box to be counted as part of the Day of Giving (DOG). Unless otherwise specified, donations from alumni will support the AFA Foundation Founders’ Fund and gifts from parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, students, and friends will benefit the Farragut Fund. You may call the Farragut Development Office at 727-384-5500 ext 278 with further questions.

Admiral Farragut Academy provides many opportunities for its students to learn and have fun after school! There are many different after school programs for students to choose from, from sports to science to Minecraft, so they can always find something they’ll like.

Challenge Island: K-3rd Grade

Challenge Island is where engineering meets imagination! It’s a one of a kind enrichment program on the cutting edge of S.T.E.A.M (Science,Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) Education and 21st Century Learning. Inspired by a popular reality TV show, each semester of Challenge Island takes place on a unique Island where our adventurous tribes tackle high-level thinking and engineering challenges at whimsical weekly destinations.

Girls On The Run: 3rd-5th Grade

SPRING SEMESTER ONLY. The Girls on the Run Program inspires girls to define their lives on their own terms. Throughout the season, the girls build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique.  The Girls on the Run lessons encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development.  Participants explore and discuss their own beliefs around experiences and challenges girls face at this age.  They also develop important strategies and skills to help them navigate life experiences. We start with helping the girls get a better understanding of who they are and what’s important to them.  Then, we look at the importance of teamwork and healthy relationships.  And, finally, the girls explore how they can positively connect with and shape the world.

LEGO Bricks: K-3rd Grade

This program provides an extraordinary atmosphere for students to build unique creations, play games, and have loads of fun using LEGO® Bricks. The activities are designed to trigger young children’s lively imaginations and build their self-confidence.  Our one-hour classes explore architecture, engineering and technology concepts using LEGO® bricks. Students participate sessions focused on exciting themes including Space, Inventions, Famous Buildings, and Natural Disasters. Classes follow the Bricks 4 Kidz® motto: We Learn, We Build, We Play with… LEGO® Bricks. Each child will receive a mini-figure that they built.

LEGO Robotics – 4th-7th Grade

The Robotics Club will participate in the highly competitive FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL). FLL introduces students to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. FLL teams discover exciting career possibilities and, through the process, learn to make positive contributions to society.

Mad Science – K-5th Grade

We are on a mission: By making science fun we aim to inspire an interest in science and a love of learning in children that will last a lifetime. In this “enlightened” program students will not believe their eyes as they examine different optical illusions and watch as light and color interact to trick their sense of sight.  Children will also put their taste buds to the test, learn how we get the “pop” in soda pop and have a “hair raising” experience working with static electricity.  They will explore the science of nutrition and being healthy, and experience the amazing power of magnetism.  The basics of sound will be uncovered with a cool Mad Science twist that includes the use of a sound machine to distort sound and our voices and experience the incredible power of heat and how it can transform matter.

Minecraft – 4th-7th Grade

The Minecraft Club is designed for students who enjoy all things Minecraft.  It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a Minecraft expert, we have something for everyone. The club will be using MinecraftEdu software which has additions to the original game to ensure that it is appropriate and educational for all members. Come explore the world of Minecraft with other passionate players!

Tennis – K-3rd Grade/4th-7th Grade

Come and join us for After School Tennis. All levels are welcome from Kindergarten to 7th grade. Tennis is coached by Coach Dean from the Treasure Island Yacht and Tennis Club. There will be differentiated instruction based on individual ability level. Instruction, drills, and games will all be incorporated into each lesson.

AP U.S. History class attends 13th annual Cannon School

The Advanced Placement United States History (APUSH) class at Admiral Farragut Academy recently attended their 13th annual Cannon School at the National Park Service Headquarters in St. Augustine, FL.

As part of the curriculum, seven students learned how to roll gunpowder into canisters, load, and fire them according to the field manual of Spanish soldiers who manned the Castillo de San Marcos circa 1740. After spending one day in the classroom and one day practicing on the gun decks above Bastion San Pablo, the Farragut APUSH class donned the uniforms of 18th century artillerymen and performed 17 different cadences, all directed in Peninsular Spanish.

After completion of the classroom and practical tests, the Farragut students in attendance, Madison Moore, Casey McKee, Kate Bonilla, Zach Fisher, Thomas Le, Cole Kolodetsky, Mitchell Lewis, Huey Seeley, Tyler Turner, Maurice Leon, Dominic Friend, all received their historic weapons certification which will enable them to volunteer at any National Park Service living history demonstration throughout the US.

AFA FFA Golf Tournament

AFA FFA Golf Tournament

We had a great day of golf this October during the 2019 Admiral Farragut Academy Golf Tournament at the historic St. Petersburg Country Club. The Farragut Family Association hosted the event with over 80 golfers and volunteers in attendance.

The beautiful afternoon kicked off with a delicious lunch followed by a one o’clock shotgun on the par 72 course. The competition was fierce, but Jon Covington’s team sponsored by EnClean captured top honors shooting a 59 in the afternoon scramble.

Tournament activities included a putting contest, longest drive, closest to the pin, and a 50/50 raffle, creating a fun atmosphere while supporting the fundraising initiative for the school. We had top-notch sponsorships, prizes, and giveaways this year from local businesses, family and friends, and had an amazing group of volunteers that helped make the day possible. We also auctioned off two fantastic golf vacations with the assistance of auctioneer Blake Kennedy. With the generous support of our Farragut community, we raised almost $8,000 and made this year’s tournament a swinging success!

The Burke Family, from L-R: Cory ‘16, Troy ‘86S, Sabrina ‘21, Lisa, and Dylan ‘18

The Burke Family resides in the Cayman Islands and are very proud of their generational legacy of Farragut graduates.

The First Generation of Burkes:

Kent (Class of 1985S), Troy (Class of 1986S), and Craig (Class of 1996)

In the spring of 1971, Troy and Kent Burke found themselves moving from their family home in Jamaica to Grand Cayman Island in the British West Indies. Their parents believed the beautiful twenty-two-mile island surrounded by white sandy beaches and turquoise blue water would provide a safer environment and greater opportunities for their family. The Burkes soon found this accurate as they were able to start successful businesses.

While Troy loved life on the island and the opportunities it provided, his parents wanted more for him and his brothers. Troy recalls that news was often delayed two or three days and that popular television shows often arrived on the island via VHS. “My family wanted us to understand that Cayman was not the world and to explore and learn more than Cayman Island life,” said Troy.

In 1981, the Burke family began to look at boarding schools in the United States as a means of increasing their sons exposure to the world and their educational opportunities. On the recommendation of an aunt and uncle who had recently moved to Clearwater, Florida, the Burke family discovered Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg and scheduled a visit. Troy recalls that upon arriving he quickly noticed how beautiful the school looked sitting across from Boca Ciega Bay with all the sailboating opportunities. Troy recalls his parents being impressed by the academic, extracurricular, and leadership opportunities Admiral Farragut Academy offered. The fact that there was family in the area made it clear that this was the school for them.
Kent started as a ninth grade international boarding student and Troy started as an eighth grader. Troy recalls the transition from the island to the Academy as “very smooth,” something Farragut still prides itself on today. He excelled in the new environment and became the lower school student who never lost sight of his goal to become Battalion Commander his senior year, which he accomplished in 1985-86. Troy takes pride to this day for achieving this goal. He embraces the profound impact which set the foundation of leadership and discipline that has served him as a successful entrepreneur and servant leader throughout his life. Troy and Kent were both followed by their younger brother, Craig, in 1994.

Troy remembers his time at Farragut as full of adventure, from “enjoying weekend trips to Busch Gardens and Booker Creek, to camping in the Everglades.” Living on campus, he developed close relationships with instructors such as the department head for math/science, Captain Sanders, and dorm supervisor, Mike Nicholson, who had a large impact on his life. “It was their passion to grow and mold the next generation to be the best young men (and now women) who will impact and serve their communities.” Troy feels indebted to these individuals, who were not just teachers in the classroom, but teachers in life.

Since his time at Farragut, Troy has built successful businesses in the Cayman Islands. He returned to the island after earning a degree from Stetson University and began working in his father’s commercial real estate and development business, Universal Equipment. Subsequently, he and his brothers joined together, along with their parents, to form the Burke family business, Heritage Holdings, which continues to thrive. Troy and Lisa also own and manage four successful Subway restaurants with plans to open a fifth location at the Cayman Islands Owen Roberts International Airport. Additionally, a successful accounting business and photographic studio make up the rest of their business portfolio.

“My family was completely committed to giving my brothers and I an excellent academic opportunity, one that has proved to be more than an education, but a foundation for life,” said Troy. “Farragut pushed me to attend college and I don’t believe I would have done so if not for the faculty and staff at Farragut.”

“Attending Farragut allowed me to broaden my worldview and to understand issues affecting my business even today.”

Troy said he will never forget a quote that Captain Orie T. Banks would often share and that left a deep impression on him, “Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.”

The Second Generation of Burkes:

Cory (Class of 2016), Dylan (Class of 2018), and Sabrina (Class of 2021)

It should come as no surprise that Troy and his wife, Lisa, a community leader and respected accountant with her own accounting firm, also wanted to ensure the best education for their children. Lisa worked with each one of their children, Cory, Dylan, and Sabrina to identify where the children excelled. As they progressed through elementary and middle school, Lisa and Troy decided they would have better opportunities by attending private school overseas.

Troy and Lisa explored their options for their oldest child, Cory, who was a rising junior at the time. One day, Cory asked his parents if he could go to boarding school in Canada, a suggestion Lisa and Troy quickly pushed back on – it was a bit further than they wanted to be from their child. Troy fondly recalls what happened next, “Cory said, ‘Dad, I want to go to Admiral Farragut Academy where you graduated.” Troy was elated, but told his son, “You cannot just spring this on us, we have to plan and see if the opportunity is available.” He challenged Cory to complete all of the admissions paperwork if he really wanted to go. To Troy’s pleasant surprise, Cory had the paperwork filled out the very next day. “Cory showed the initiative that he really wanted this academic and leadership experience and to follow in my footsteps,” said Troy. Sending a child to boarding school is an investment, and although the Burke family had to sacrifice purchasing a new home at the time, they knew it was the right decision because of the impact Farragut had on Troy and his brothers.

Cory started at the Academy during his junior year and like his father found Farragut to be a welcoming place full of activity. During his time at Farragut, Cory took advantage of all that was offered and excelled in drill, earned his Master Diver scuba certification, played on the tennis team, honed his sailing skills, and was a member of the color guard. As a result of his hard work and dedication, Cory graduated in 2016 with honors and a scholarship to attend Stetson University. He was subsequently offered a scholarship to attend the University of Tampa where he is currently working on his undergraduate degree in Entrepreneurship. Recently, Cory, along with several other Farragut alumni, served as camp counselors with a former Farragut science and diving instructor, Mr. Davenport.

Throughout his two years at Farragut, Cory would return home every holiday break and share with his siblings stories of his weekend trips, adventures on the bay, his favorite faculty and staff mentors, and the hands-on learning he was experiencing. In 2016, Dylan (Class of 2018) followed Cory to Admiral Farragut for his junior year. Initially, Dylan recalls being in his brother’s shadow, but states, “I quickly became my own individual.” Dylan immersed himself into life at Farragut and became a Regimental Officer, served on the drill team, became a member of both the National Honors Society and Spanish National Honors Society, and earned his Master Diver Scuba Certification.

Dylan graduated this past May with honors, received several scholarship opportunities, and enrolled at Eckerd College this fall to study Environmental Studies with a minor in Business Management. Dylan was encouraged by Mr. Sadler to attend because he also went to Eckerd and the college’s science program is highly regarded. (Henry Sadler replaced Mike Nicholson after his retirement in 2018).

As their boys progressed through high school life at Farragut, Lisa and Troy wanted their daughter, Sabrina, to receive the Farragut Experience as well. Desiring their daughter to have a full four years at Farragut and as many opportunities as possible, Sabrina started as a freshman in the fall of 2017 and will graduate in 2021. Sabrina’s own transition, like her father and brothers before her, was smooth, aided by the fact she had older brother, Dylan, to help her adapt to boarding school life. Sabrina quickly came into her own, excelling in extracurricular and academic activities, volunteering in the community, being part of the drill team and “making lifelong friends from all over the world.”

It’s About Honor, Tradition, and Legacy for the Burke Family

For Kent ‘85, Troy ‘86, Craig ‘96, Cory ‘16, Dylan ‘18, and Sabrina ‘21, Farragut has become more than an education, but a home away from home and an extended family. Troy still remains in contact with lifelong friends made at Farragut, including his roommate, Stuart Brown (also class of 1986). Stuart and Troy remained roommates throughout college and continue to get together with their families as much as they can. The Burkes fondly recall instructors who devoted their lives to theirs such as Mike Nicholson, who taught Troy, Cory, and Dylan about science and life, and Henry Sadler who continues the tradition today.

Although not an alumna herself, Lisa feels a special connection to Farragut and the lifelong lesson of working hard and setting family goals that Farragut embraces. Lisa shared, “It’s amazing when you are at a family event and see multiple generations of Farragut alumni including my husband, brothers-in-law, and my children, coming together to talk and share their Farragut experiences.”

“It’s amazing how one school can have such a lasting legacy and impact so many generations.”

The Burkes want their children to find their passion and to make a difference wherever they feel called – on the island, in the States, or beyond. Troy and Lisa are thrilled to watch how the Farragut Experience of education, leadership, lifelong friendships and connections across the globe will influence the lives of Cory, Dylan, and Sabrina as they get older.

2019 Alumni Homecoming Weekend Events

Thursday, October 17th

The alumni weekend kicked off on Thursday, Oct 17th with the Admiral Farragut Academy Golf Tournament at the historic St. Petersburg Country Club. The Farragut Family Association hosted the event with over 80 golfers, and the winning team, comprised of players Michael Koebel ‘09, Jeff Ogden ‘00, Alex Weghorn ‘05 and parent Doug Waechter, shot a 63 also earning them the Alumni Cup.

Friday, October 18th

The Farragut bond was renewed and strengthened with over 225 alumni attendees from the class of 1946 to the class of 2014 coming to the St. Petersburg campus to celebrate in the homecoming festivities. On Friday, Oct. 18, the alumni were treated with cadet-led campus tours and the Farragut Campus Experience where they were able to reminisce and become a cadet again by attending such classes as biology, engineering, and aviation, where some “flew” via a state-of-the-art flight simulator.

During Friday afternoon, alumni gathered in the Huntley Gym for a memorial dedication for Coach Stan Slaby and his wife Polly. Victoria Raymer, Director of Alumni Engagement, designed a trophy case which comprised of an engraved plaque complete with Slaby’s Navy and Marine Corp medals and other coaching memorabilia. Coach Stan Slaby and his wife, Polly, dedicated over 30 years of mentoring and coaching to Farragut athletes. David Yoho ’68N, and one of Coach Slaby’s all-state football stars, spoke of the impact coach made and unveiled the Slaby Scholarship Fund. The fund will provide a scholarship to a deserving cadet who desires a Farragut education with future goals to attend a military service academy.

The Farragut pride continued as alumni and families gathered for the Homecoming Parade. Commandant Todd Wallingford reviewed the cadets as well as alumni members Don Schrieber ‘46S, Al Ross ‘49S, George Michel ‘49S, Peter Easton ‘49S, and Robert Otto ‘69N,  Jim Sowards ‘69S, Michael Grimler ‘69S, Robert Stein ‘69S, EK Wilcox ‘69S, David Haas ‘69S, Jim McClaugherty 69S, for the pass and review.

After the parade the ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the DeSeta Hall Building Dedication. Jake Jacobus, the capital campaign chairman, and board member Art Musicaro ‘73N shared their gratitude for the Farragut community coming together to make the building a reality for the students. Attendees toured the theater and music, visual arts, and band classrooms.

Over one hundred alumni showed off their blue and gold spirit at the Commandant’s tailgate party, gathering under a big tent in despite the rain. Thank you to Farragut family, Brad and Stephanie Piche, who donated food from Ricky T’s. Despite the inclement weather, the BlueJackets took home the big win versus Tampa Bay Christian Academy with a final score of 28-0.

Saturday, October 19th

The weekend concluded with a fun-packed reception and dinner in DeSeta Hall. The master of ceremonies, David Yoho ‘68N, made for a lively and entertaining evening.

Guest speakers Doug Pearson ‘66S and Corky Newcombe ‘66S honored their Farragut memories by presenting a book: AFA – The Cadets of ‘66S, A Journal of Their Brotherhood. Pearson and Newcombe presented the first-edition journals as well as a donation of $1,966 to Headmaster Bob Fine. The unveiling of the ‘66S journal brought over 30 alumni and spouses to celebrate homecoming this year, which was the biggest class represented.

Michael Grimler ‘69S shared his fond memories to commemorate his class’ 50th reunion. Grimler shared CDR Orie Banks’ sage advice he still remembers today: “You will need to build your house upon a rock rather than sand, and I’m proud to say Farragut was one of those rocks.”

The evening concluded with film and television producer Joseph Zolfo ‘86N. Zolfo shared his TV reel that highlighted films and shows he has produced and his experience breaking into the TV industry. Perhaps most impressive was how Zolfo made it to Farragut and the impact it had on his life. “I often tell myself if it wasn’t for Admiral Farragut Academy I would not have risen to the level of success of where I am today,” he said. “I run my film productions like a Battalion Commander.”

“It was such a wonderful honor for me to speak to the AFA alumni community. Thank you for having me, my family and friends had a wonderful time.” Joseph Zolfo ‘86N

Here’s what some more alumni had to say about the weekend:

“Last night’s farewell ceremonies were outstanding and, honestly, an event that I did not want to leave. A rally of cadets and families with like-minded ideas about the one true message conveyed. Admiral Farragut Academy is beloved and must continue on to meet the future needs for the sake of perpetuating all that we have grown to love.” John Akin ‘69S

“We just experienced the ultimate return to home that sent us to where we are today. I am sure that you are impressed as I with the direction of Farragut has taken. Some of our classmates have declared we are aiming for the 65th (reunion).” Fred Nelson ‘59S

“Thanks to the AFA staff who did a fantastic job making us feel warm and welcome. I hope we didn’t steal too much attention from the other classes, but also hope that we have provided a solid example of alumni loyalty to the school and to our ‘band of brothers’ from 1966.” Skip Thaeler ‘66S

Thank you to everyone who attended this amazing weekend and we look forward to next year’s event.

Lower School students earn gold at Junior Olympics

Seventh-grader Jacob Arias and third-grader Jacob Cuesta have more in common than their school and first names: Both have taekwondo black belts, and both gold-medaled at the July 2019 AAU Junior Olympics.

At the time, Jacob Arias was 12, and Jacob Cuesta 8. Already, they’d been in the sport for most of their lives (Jacob Arias started training at age 5, and Jacob Cuesta at age 2). In addition, both study with Master Tony Perri Taekwondo just a few blocks from Farragut’s campus.

Jacob Arias won four gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze. Jacob Cuesta won five gold medals and three silver. They shared one of those gold medals as part of a three-person team, for synchronized forms. (The third competitor, teammate Kristian Ramlochan, is not a Farragut student.)

Like the boys, taekwondo is fairly young — having emerged as a martial art less than 100 years ago. It is characterized by an emphasis on kicking, including head-height kicks, jumping and spinning kicks, and fast-kicking techniques.

The Jacobs visited the epicenter of taekwondo in 2017, when they and several others studied at South Korea’s Chosun University. While there, yet one more Jacob was with the group. To lessen the confusion, Jacob Arias became Dragon Jacob and Jacob Cuesta became Tiger Jacob, nicknames they still carry today.

“This helped when someone was calling for Jacob and all three boys turned around,” said Diane Trumbull, mother of Jacob Arias.

Both boys were drawn to the strength and discipline of taekwondo. Plus, you never know when those skills will come in handy.

“I started practicing taekwondo so I can protect my family and friends,” Jacob Cuesta told WTSP 10 News.

Both he and his grandfather, John Cuesta, say their life mission is to serve the public. Jacob Cuesta hopes to attend the United States Naval Academy and have a career as a U.S. Navy officer. John Cuesta was a Tampa Police officer before becoming an attorney.

Meanwhile, Jacob Arias, a second-degree black belt, aspires to serve in a different way: “His engineering interests are to develop new communication and weapon systems for the military to keep our country safe,” said Trumbull, through whom Jacob met — and has been inspired by — many Raytheon engineers.

To achieve tomorrow’s dreams, both boys are working hard today. For instance, their before-school routine includes weighing in, stretching, doing forms, and running on the treadmill for about two miles.

“To be successful in TKD takes goal-setting, focus, and hard work,” said Jacob Arias, “just like what is needed to be successful in my Farragut classes.”

Lower school brothers honor veterans on Veterans Day

As part of a self-directed Boy Scout Community Service Project, the Razavi brothers (Admiral Farragut Academy 7th grader Erfan and 6th grader Arman) decided to make an extra effort this Veterans Day to honor those who serve our nation.

They began their project by collecting over 30 “thank you” notes addressed specifically to marines who are currently in boot camp and just beginning their journey of service. The boys requested the notes be delivered to all those servicemen and women who had not yet, or ever, received any mail from family or friends during their time in boot camp. It was important for the boys to provide encouragement to those whose sacrifice is only just beginning.

Social Studies teacher Mr. Singleton allowed the boys 10 minutes during class to explain the project to their classmates and to hand out “Home of the Brave” notecards to the students for them to write their own thoughts of appreciation. Each card was remarkably thoughtful.

In addition to collecting thank you cards for new service members, the boys also participated in the second annual Walking with Warriors prayer brunch held Saturday, November 9. The Walking with Warriors Ministry was founded in an effort to provide faith-based resources to first responders and military members who struggle with PTSD. This year’s prayer brunch specifically honored local Vietnam Veterans whose service and sacrifice deserve long overdue recognition and appreciation. The boys also had the distinct honor of serving breakfast to two local WWII Veterans aged 97 and 103.

We are very proud to see these young men give back to those who serve our country. Thank you Erfan and Arman for your great work!

Pledge – Hannah Singleton, 7th-grade student, and Student Council Vice President

Cans for CASAHannah Singleton & Sophia Preston

Good morning Lower School. My name is Hannah Singleton and this is Sophia Preston. This morning, we are here to talk about CASA, which is a cause Student Council is deeply devoted to. CASA is an organization that provides food, shelter and lifesaving services to women, men and children.  During the month of November, we will be hosting a food drive to help support the needs of CASA. Starting Monday, we will be collecting non-perishable food items such as soup, cereal, fruit juice, tuna, and many other items. The food can be dropped off at the Lower School office.

Let’s come together as the Lower School and make a difference in the lives of those in need. Thank you.

Character Words for November are Patriotism & Citizenship:

Citizenship requires doing our share for our community and our country. Being a good citizen means caring about the good of society and participating actively to make things better.

Patriotism is an important part of good citizenship. Patriotism is the love of and loyalty to our country.

To help us better understand Patriotism and Citizenship, I have invited Mr. Merryman to speak about them. Before I bring Mr. Merryman up to speak I would like to give you some background on him. Mr. Merryman is married and has two children, Jordan, who is in our 3rd-grade class & Jessica who is attending college.  He has 19 years of government service and 25 years as an entrepreneur building and operating companies both within the United States and overseas. He is currently retired. Mr. Merryman served in the United States Navy for eight years primarily with the Navy SEAL teams. He was recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and worked Counterterrorism and Paramilitary Operations worldwide for 11 years with full-time overseas assignments in Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Latin America.  He has traveled to 112+ countries and has lived overseas in six countries. He has had the privilege of serving his country in numerous varieties of operations and endeavors, over many years, as both a government employee and contractor. The highlight of his career was being selected to serve on the 1st United States response team after 9/11 which was the first team into Afghanistan.

Mr. Singleton for Patrol Recognitions:

Safety Patrol continues to do an outstanding job each day. I would like to recognize two students who have been recommended for promotion by our captain, Katie Lynch. These two individuals have been present for most of our morning and afternoon patrol duties and they are always eager to help with all patrol responsibilities. It is my pleasure to promote Danielle Larrinaga and Jacob Singleton to the rank of Sergeant.

To end our assembly Grades 1/2/3 will be singing,  You’re a Grand Old Flag.
